Ernst Scheidegger traveled to the Middle East on several occasions: to Yemen, Oman, but also Egypt and the Sudan. It was a photo-feature commissioned by the Aga Khan that took him to Egypt. Cairo always served as the point of departure for the photo-journalism which he undertook with Arnold Hottinger (NZZ) in Southern Egypt and in the Sudan.
